D3football.com recognizes Gallaudet's Tony Tatum with Play of the Week, Team of the Week honors

MINNEAPOLIS - Gallaudet University senior cornerback Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) was named to D3football.com's Team of the Week and his touchdown catch received Play of the Week honors following the Bison's historic first-ever win over Catholic University of America last Friday night. This marks the second time in program history that a Gallaudet player has received D3football.com Team of the Week honors and first time a Gallaudet play was named Play of the Week.

These honors represent the second and third time this week Tatum has been recognized for his outstanding performance as he was named Division III Defensive Player of the Week by the Beyond Sports College Network (BSCN) website on Monday.

Tatum picked off two passes on defense and switched over to offense where he made the spectacular touchdown catch for which he received the Play of the Week honor. Tatum made his first interception in the second quarter, when he picked off Catholic senior quarterback Greg Cordivari at the Gallaudet 26. While falling to the ground, Tatum reached up with his left arm and tipped the ball into his right hand before reeling the ball into his chest on a play that was named a D3football.com Play of the Week Finalist. On the ensuing offensive possession for the Bison, Tatum made a rare appearance at wide receiver and out jumped his coverage in the corner of the end zone to bring down the 10-yard reception to give Gallaudet the 14-7 lead. Tatum, who was rarely thrown at, came up with his second interception in the third quarter when he picked off Cordivari (four interceptions) yet again. He also made an impact on special teams, returning a punt for 24 yards.

Last season, Bison wide receiver Ryne Worsham (Chicago, Ill.) was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week following Gallaudet University's season-opening overtime loss to Otterbein University. Worsham had a career game with seven receptions for a career-best 155 yards and two touchdowns.  It marked the first time in program history that a Gallaudet player received such an honor.
