Castleton Falls to St. John Fisher, 63-7 in ECAC Northwest Bowl

Pittsford, N.Y. – Castleton faced its toughest opponent of the season and couldn't creat much offense in the first half, ultimately falling to St. John Fisher 63-7 on Saturday at Growney Stadium in the ECAC Northwest Bowl. 

The Spartans were held scoreless in the first half for the first time all year and finished the contest with 133 yards of total offense. The Cardinals, meanwhile, totaled 527 yards of offense with six touchdowns. 

Senior Greg Vreeland got the start at quarterback for Castleton and finished the day 8-for-16 for 69 yards. He also led the team with 49 yards rushing and one touchdown on the ground. Sophomore Kevin Alberque led the receiving corps with two catches for 22 yards.

Defensively, senior Brandon Bergeron tied a career high with 15 tackles while junior Todd Carr finished with 12. For Bergeron he concludes his career with a school-record 258 tackles, while Carr sets a new program mark for tackles in a season with 118.

St. John Fisher received the ball to open the game andscored its first touchdown 13:05 into the game on a 26-yard run by Ryan Kramer. The Cardinals added two more scores in the first quarter to extend their lead to 21-0. 

The second quarter was much of the same as St. John Fisher scored 21 points in the first 14:45. A fumble on the ensuing kickoff by Castleton gave the Cardinals the ball with eight seconds left and they scored with two seconds remaining to take a 49-0 halftime lead. 

St. John Fisher scored twice in the third quarter and Castleton finally got on the board in the fourth, as Greg Vreeland scored on a rushing touchdown from one yard out to make it a 63-7 contest with 9:42 left. 

Castleton finishes its season with a school-record seven victories, including a 6-1 mark in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. 

Notes: Brandon Boyle was held without a touchdown for the first time in 13 games on Saturday … Boyle finishes the season with a school records of 96 catches, 1,533 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns … Shane Brozowski finishes with single-season school records of 3,294 passing yards, and 31 touchdowns … Kevin Alberque concludes his season with a program-record 1,715 all-purpose yards.
