Newton, MA – Mount Ida College is celebrating the grand opening of its new athletic turf field on the evening of August 31, 2012.  The new athletic field is a state-of-the-art facility featuring all season turf, energy efficient lighting, new stands, press box and scoreboard. The grand opening will be Mount Ida’s first night football game against UMASS Dartmouth on August 31 at 5:30 PM.  “Light the Night” will include a student pep rally and donor reception, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony and Mustang football versus UMASS Dartmouth.  Barry Brown, Mount Ida’s new president, and special guest, the Honorable Setti Warren, Newton’s Mayor, will do the coin toss prior to kick off.

“Over the years, all of our varsity teams have worked really hard and achieved a lot.  Playing under the lights on the new turf field for the first time is an exciting moment for all of us.  The Board, alumni and administration made this happen and our athletes, coaches and teams are thankful.  We want to celebrate loud and proud by bringing home a victory for everyone on Friday night,” stated Matthew Bonomolo ’13, Sports Management Major and Captain of Mount Ida’s football team.

The grand opening evening also acknowledges the tremendous support received in the most successful capital campaign in Mount Ida College’s history.  The campaign, Our Campus, Our Vision, Our Mustangs, kicked off in early 2012 to raise funds to construct the new turf field and a practice field upgrade.  The unprecedented financial support from alumni, parents and the Board of Trustees marks another new beginning for Mount Ida off the field in terms of increased alumni support for all phases of college development.  In honor of our alumni and parent support, the Board of Trustees has named the new turf field, Alumni Field.

Barry Brown, President, Mount Ida College stated, “Our new, all season, lighted athletic field facility is a fitting symbol of the dynamism and growth of the College.  I am grateful to our alumni, the Board of Trustees and the College community for making it happen.  We intend to continue this path of facilities development to provide our students, faculty and staff a fitting environment for study and growth on our magnificent campus.”

The College expects the new, state-of-the-art field, located in the center of its spacious, 72-acre campus, to attract even more talented student athletes around the country, who are drawn to Mount Ida for its professionally-focused academic programs and growing predominance in NCAA Division III athletics.  To learn more about Mount Ida College Athletics, visit www.mountidamustangs.com.
