CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Junior defensive back Jovan Wilkins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) has added another accolade to his name after a standout performance in week one. Wilkins was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday evening, taking the first weekly award at the Division III Northeast Region.
Wilkins led the Mount Ida defense by forcing all three of their turnovers in their opening week 21-20 win over UMass Dartmouth. He came up with two interceptions, one which led to the Mustangs' first touchdown, and another which preserved the lead in the fourth quarter. Wilkins also forced a fumble that was recovered by the Mustangs, blocked a kick, and had a team-high 7 tackles, 1.5 of them for a loss.
Wilkins was already named both Defensive and Special Team Player of the Week by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC). He and the Mustangs (1-0) will play their home opener this Saturday afternoon against Plymouth State at 1:00 pm.
