MIT Blanks Becker, 34-0

LEICESTER, Mass. – Junior quarterback Peter Williams (Portland, Ore.) threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns to help lead MIT to a convincing 34-0 win over Becker College in non-conference football action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. The win lifts the Engineers record to 2-0, while the Hawks fall to 1-1.

The Engineers were able to score on their first five possessions of the game. On MIT's opening drive, Williams connected with senior wide receiver Billy Thalheimer (Natick, Mass.) on a 21 yard touchdown pass.  MIT increased their lead to 14-0 on their very next drive when Williams scampered out of the pocket for a 14 yard touchdown run.  After Becker went three and out on their next pssession, the Engineers setup Tucker Cheyne (Avon, Conn.) for a 37 yard field goal, making the score 17-0.

MIT capped off the first half of play when Williams hit Karson Ota (Katy, Texas) for a 35 yard touchdown strike, giving the Engineers a commanding 24-0 advantage. With the Hawks driving late in the first half, Brent Johnson (La Cañada, Calif) intercepted a Bobby Baker (Monroe, Conn.) pass inside the Engineers eight yard line, spoiling an opportunity for Becker to get back into the game.
On the Engineers opening drive of the second half Tucker Cheyne nailed a 42 yard field goal to put MIT ahead, 27-0.  With 11:56 remaining in regulation, Justin Wallace (Palatine, Ill) took a handoff 87 yards down the far sideline to give the Engineers a 34-0 advantage.
Wallace led the Engineers with a game high 109 yards on 22 carries. Nathan Varady (Fayetteville, Ark.) led all receivers with 85 yards on four catches. Brad Goldsberry (Elizabeth, Colo.) chipped in with 61 yards receiving.  Along with his 261 yards passing, Peter Williams also rushed for 77 yards on just seven carries.

Not to be overlooked, the MIT defense held the Hawks to just 195 yards of total offense.  Senior linebacker Jake Laux (Dousman, Wis.) led the charge with a game high 12 tackles and one forced fumble.  Defensive lineman Kamil Mafoud (Staten Island, N.Y.) batted down two passes, while Luther Banner (St. Louis, Mo) make two tackles for a loss.

The Becker offense was led by sophomore running back Matthew Romasco (Port St. Lucie, Fla), who carried the ball 17 times for 77 yards. Sophomore Josh Lawrence (Manhattan, N.Y.) led the Becker defense with a team high nine tackles, including three and a half tackles for a loss.

Becker returns to action next Saturday, September 21 when they host Hartwick College at 4:00 p.m. MIT will return to the gridiron on Saturday, September 28 when they begin the New England Football Conference portion of their schedule with a visit to Savle Regina at 1:00 p.m.
