KILLINGWORTH, Conn. — Dean College junior Mozes Mooney (San Diego, Calif.) has been named the Week 8 recipient of the prestigious New England Football Writers Association (NEFWA) Gold Helmet Award, presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation.

Mooney, a converted wide receiver making only his second start at quarterback last week, completed 28 of 34 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns (25, 18, 22 yards) to lead Dean to a 36-35 overtime win over Alfred State.

Mooney also rushed for two touchdowns including the game-tying 3-yard run with just 44-seconds remaining in regulation.

In overtime, his third TD pass of the contest brought the Bulldogs to within a point and his conversion pass gave Dean the win.

The honor marks the second season in a row in which a Bulldog was recognized by the NEFWA. Wide receiver Errol Breaux '22 (Baton Rouge, La.) earned the Gold Helmet Award in Week 1 last season.

The Gold Helmet Award is announced each week from Labor Day Weekend through the second weekend in November to Division I (FBS & FCS) and Division II/III football student-athletes who have established themselves for outstanding contributions to their teams on the given week. A New England sportswriter will select the outstanding performer of that week's games in both the College (Divisions II/III) and University (FBS & FCS) Divisions.

Marques DeShields of the University of Rhode Island was the recipient for Division I.

All the weekly Gold Helmet recipients will be honored at the annual NEFWA Captains and Awards Banquet on Thursday, December 8, at the Sheraton Framingham Hotel and Conference Center. To learn more about the NEFWA, click HERE.
