Spartans Stymied By St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Vermont State University Castleton football program kept St. Lawrence off the scoreboard in the second half, but the offense struggled to move the ball against a stout Saints defense in a 28-0 defeat at Leckonby Stadium.

The Spartan defense forced a pair of third-quarter turnovers with interceptions by Max Fair and Ryan DuclosJordan Wright had a game-leading eight tackles with 1.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. Tyler Buxton had 1.5 sacks as part of a seven-tackle afternoon, and Dawson Pierson added seven tackles of his own.

SLU's pass defense limited the Spartan passing game, but the team's starting running backs were effective in limited opportunity. Devin Wollner collected 44 yards on 11 carries and Christian Keeling ran for 23 yards on five attempts. Keeling also had two receptions along with Wyatt Jackson.

The Saints' Will Lederman completed 20-of-31 passes for 22 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for a pair of scores, netting 48 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Cole Salyards was on the receiving end of one of those touchdowns and finished the day with 11 catches for 115 yards. Matt Kowalski also caught a touchdown.

Joseph O'Neil led SLU with seven tackles on defense. Ryan Watson had two sacks and Nicholas Giardina had an interception.

St. Lawrence (2-2) outgained VTSU Castleton (2-2) 390-87 in total yardage thanks in part to a 12-for-18 day on third down conversions. Castleton converted only 2-of-14 on third down.

The Spartans look to get back in the win column next Saturday at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
