2022 ECFC Weekly Release — Week #6

KILLINGWORTH, Conn. — The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) has released its weekly award winners for games played through Saturday, October 8.

The following student-athletes have been honored for their standout performances.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alex Cohen (Plymouth, Mass.), Anna Maria College, Sr., QB
  • Cohen was responsible for five touchdowns in Anna Maria's 41-27 victory over Maritime (N.Y.)
  • Through the air, Cohen completed 22 passes (31 attempts, 0 interceptions) for 299 yards and four TDs
  • He also compiled a team-leading 83 rushing yards and found the end zone once on 10 attempts
  • Both his completion percentage (71.0) and rushing yard figures were season-highs

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
John Werner Jr. (Frederick, Md.), Gallaudet, So., LB
  • Werner's 62-yard pick six was the difference for the Bison in their 20-17 triumph against Castleton 
  • His first career touchdown came with 6:54 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Gallaudet a 20-10 lead, at the time
  • Werner finished the contest with a season-high seven tackles (2 solo, 5 assisted), including one sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss
  • The interception return marked the first defensive score for the Bison this season

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sean Murphy (Bayville, N.Y.), Maritime (N.Y.), So., DL
  • Murphy blocked a punt to set up a go-ahead score for the Privateers versus Anna Maria
  • He also tallied three tackles (all assisted, 0.5 TFL) and one quarterback hurry
  • The block was the first of his career
  • Murphy's three tackles set a new season-high

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Justin Horvath (Grand Island, N.Y.), Alfred State, Fr., QB
  • Horvath produced three touchdowns in Alfred State's 42-33 win over Keystone
  • Under center, Horvath completed nine passes on 18 attempts for 170 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception
  • His 5-yard rushing touchdown in the third (10:05, 35-10 lead) proved to be the game-winner
  • Horvath's 72-yard TD pass in the second (8:27, 21-7) marked his third 50-plus-yard passing touchdown of the season in as many games (long 73)

About the ECFC

The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference was formed in the spring of 2009 as an NCAA Division III single-sport football conference. The conference, named after the geographic location of the institutions began competition in the fall of 2009.

Current members are Alfred State College (Alfred, NY), Anna Maria College (Worcester, MA), Castleton University (Castleton, VT.), Dean College (Franklin, MA), Gallaudet University (Washington, D.C.), Keystone College (La Plume, PA), and Maritime College State University of New York (Throggs Neck, NY).

The mission of the conference is to:

  1. Promote intercollegiate varsity football as an integral part of the educational experience of all competitors. 
  2. Establish a conference schedule and determine a conference championship that will represent the conference as the automatic qualifier to the NCAA national tournament.
  3. Adopt sportsmanship, fair play, moral integrity, and competitive excellence as cornerstones of the conference.
