Dietrich Defends Special Teams Title, 10 Privateers Selected for ECFC All-Conference Honors

GAITHERSBURG, Md. – The Maritime Football team was well represented by the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference as 10 members of the 2014 football team were selected as All-Conference Honorees as announced by the league on Thursday morning.
 
For the second consecutive season, junior placekicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) was picked as the ECFC Special Teams Player of the Year, and was also named to the First Team Offense.
 
Senior fullback Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony's) was also named to the First Team Offense as was offensive lineman Casey Boos (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). The Second Team Offense also saw senior return specialist Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) named to the squad.
 
On defense, senior defensive end Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was selected to the first team defense, as was Klass for his performance as a defensive back during his final season with the team. Senior Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) was picked as a member of the ECFC Second Team Defense at the linebacker position.
 
Three other Privateers were named to the ECFC Honorable Mention listing, with senior Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) picked as both a return specialist as well as a running back. Senior defensive lineman Chris Shehata (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) finished off his career with honorable mentions accolades, while junior linebacker Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) was also named to the Honorable Mention list.
 
For Dietrich, it was his second straight selection as the ECFC Special Teams Players of the Year, as he joins elite company of just five players in the history of the ECFC to win two end-of-season individual accolades. That includes Maritime's Keith Barnes, who won the Defensive Player of the Year award in both 2010 and 2011. Dietrich is only the second repeat winner for the Special Teams award, as former Norwich Kicker Long Ding won the award in both 2010 and 2011 as well.
 
On the year, Dietrich led the team with 55 points on the season, as he converted 13 field goals and 16 extra points. He ranked eighth in all of NCAA DIII with 1.44 field goals per game and also 14th in Division III with an 81% success rate on field goals this season. Four of his 14 field goals were greater than 40 yards, including his program-record 49-yard field goal set earlier this season. Overall on the season he was named ECFC Special Teams Player of the Week on four separate occasions.
 
Gardner led team in rushing with 884 Yards, which was second in the ECFC, and 76th in Division III through the regular season. That included the longest rush amongst all ECFC rushers this season with a 76 yard run. For his career, Gardner finished 2nd on All-Time Rushing List at Maritime with 1,845 Yards, and also 5th All-Time in Rushing Touchdowns Scored.
 
Boos was a key cog on the Privateer offensive line for each of the past three seasons. This year, he helped the team to 209.4 rushing yards per game in 2014 which was second in ECFC, and 55th in all of NCAA Division III. He was also a part of the Privateer offensive line that ranked 46th in Division III in quarterback sacks allowed on season.
 
As a return-man, Klass set the Maritime single-season record for kick return yards in a single season with 461 in 2014. He also had four Punt returns for 60 Yards on the year. On the season he had a year-best 83 return yards against eventual ECFC Champion Husson. Meanwhile as a defensive back, Klass had 28 tackles on the season, and also led the ECFC with six interceptions. He broke up seven passes in 2014 and also had two blocked kicks, which was good enough for second in the ECFC and 20th in all of Division III. For his career, Klass ended up first on Maritime's All-Time interceptions list with 11. On the season, he was a two-time ECFC Defensive Player of the Week, and also accomplishes a rare feat in the ECFC as a three-time All-Conference honoree.
 
O'Brien also set a number of records for Maritime in his four seasons with the team, as he was second on the team this year with 80 tackles, good enough for eighth in the ECFC. He also had 18 tackles for a loss in yardage to place him 26th in all of Division III. On the year he also had 6.5 sacks to finish first on the All-Time sacks list with 18.5 for his career, as well as a first place standing on tackles for a loss with 45 such tackles. This year, he was a one-time ECFC Defensive Player of the Week.
 
Team team's leading tackler was Coffiey, as he led the team with 82 tackles to rank fifth in ECFC, and 186th in DIII. The senior also contributed with interception, two tackles for a loss in yardage, one sack for 11 yards, and also broke up one pass. For his career, he ended with 213 career tackles to place him fourth on Maritime's tackle list for a single career.
 
Caneparo was picked as an honorable mention for his role as a return specialist as well as a running back. As a return specialist he finished the season with 223 return yards on nine kickoff returns, which included a season-best 40-yard return against USMMA. In his role in the Privateer backfield, Caneparo was 10th in the league with 445 net rushing yards, including the fourth longest rush amongst ECFC backs this year for 71 yards.
 
Shehata was a leader within the ECFC amongst tackles for defensive lineman as the senior finished the campaign with 37 tackles, including five for a loss in yardage. He was also third on the Privateers with a pair of sacks, and also recovered one fumble in his final season with the team.
 
Rounding out the awards was Knight, who ranked 3rd on the Privateers with 64 tackles, for the 18th best total in the ECFC. He was also 2nd on the team with seven tackles for a loss in yardage, and also led the team with three forced fumbles, putting him 35th in all of Division III. For his career, he has 154 Career Tackles, already seventh on the all-time list at Maritime.
 
Mount Ida led the league with 15 players recognized, nine of which were on the All-Conference Teams. Castleton was second with 14 selections (8 All-Conference Players); with league champion Husson having all 12 of its selections earn All-Conference accolades.
 
Maritime and Norwich were next as the pair finished with 10 overall selections, with seven each having All-Conference players. Gallaudet had nine players honored (six All-Conference selections), followed by Anna Maria with eight selections (six All-Conference), then Becker with five players (four All-Conference).
 
Other individual awards saw Castleton wide receiver win ECFC Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Husson swept the remainder of the awards with Stephan Dance collecting defensive honors. Alex Young was named as the ECFC Offensive Lineman of the year, while running back John Smith was picked as the league's top rookie. Eagle Head Coach Gabby Smith was picked as the league's top coach.
 
The Privateers finished the season with a 4-6 mark overall on the season, while finishing league play at 3-4. Maritime will build towards the 2015 season, which is slated to begin in early September of 2015.
