Maritime Football Adds Calvin Powell to Coaching Staff

THROGGS NECK, N.Y.  – The Maritime football coaching staff has announced the addition of Calvin Powell to the 2014 football staff on Wednesday morning.

"I am excited to bring a man of Calvin's character into our Maritime community and football team," announced 10th season head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes. "Calvin impressed us during the interview process with his ability to communicate and teach the game of football and he will be a great addition to our staff. He has a wide range of recruiting experience, which will help us reach prospective student athletes in the tri-state region and beyond."

Powell will be responsible for coaching the team's running back unit as well as being the team's video coordinator. He will take over a squad that rushed for 2,895 yards a season ago on 611 carries en route to scoring 24 touchdowns on the ground during the 2013 campaign. In addition to his coaching duties, Powell will be responsible for recruiting the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) of New York, while also scouting for future Privateers in New Jersey, as well as southern and western areas of the United States.

Powell brings over six seasons of experience as both and offensive coordinator, and as an offensive line coach to the Maritime staff. Most recently, he served as the offensive line coach and running game coordinator for the District Championship team at St. Michael's Catholic Academy in Austin, Texas.

From 2009-12 he coached at Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma, and over that time led numerous offensive linemen to All-Conference selections. In 2011, while serving as the offensive line coach, he helped guide the team to a Co-Championship in the Central States Football league as he led the nation's 23rd rushing unit.

In 2008, Powell served as the offensive line coach at the Greenhill School in Addison, Texas.

Powell received his Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management with a minor in Business Administration from Southwestern College in Georgetown, Texas. He also has his Master's Degree in Education from Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma.

Maritime is slated to begin its 2014 schedule on Friday, September 5 at 7 p.m. when the Privateers welcome in the William Paterson Pioneers on the newly renovated Reinhart Field.
