Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Maritime Football team finished off the 2014 season with a win against rival Gallaudet on Saturday afternoon on Hotchkiss Field by the score of 26-0.
For Maritime, it was the team's first shutout victory since the 2011 season when the Privateers blanked Western Connecticut State by the score of 48-0 in early September.
"We had a full team effort today," commented Head Coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes after the game. "It was a great way to end the season, especially for our seniors to go out on a high note. Also give credit to our defense that really earned today's shutout."
The Privateers were led offensively by senior fullback Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony's), who finished off the season with a 153-yard effort as he cements his place as Maritime's second all-time rusher with 1,845 yards on 385 career carries. Classmate Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) collected 96 yards on the ground and also had a rushing score, while sophomore Brett McKinney (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy), and classmate Sean Kinney (Calvert, Md./Calvert) both had rushing scores.
Freshman quarterback Jordan Formicola (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) collected 85 yards on the ground as well, and also completed the team's lone pass of the afternoon for an 11-yard gain to junior Vincent Jones (Cudjoe Key, Fla./Key West). Junior placekicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) also ended the contest with eight points on a pair of field goals and two extra points.
The defense was well balanced for the Privateers as no single player had more than nine tackles. Leading the way was junior linebacker Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) with nine, while senior Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) picked up eight more tackles including 1.5 for a loss in yardage and also forced a fumble, O'Brien finished his career with 205 tackles to place him 5th All-Time at Maritime. He also became Maritime's all-time leader in tackles for a loss in yardage, breaking the first-place tie he had entering play today.
Finishing his career 4th All-Time in tackles was senior Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy), as he collected five against Gallaudet and also had an interception. Senior Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) finished up 6th All-Time in tackles with eight on the game, and 168 for his career.
Also making his way into the Top-10 on All-Time tackles was senior cornerback Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet), who ends his career with 105 stops. Fittingly, Klass also had an interception in his final game as a Privateer to clinch the top-spot on the All-Time interceptions list with 11 for his career.
For the game, Maritime stormed out of the gates quickly with the fourth play of the game as Gardner forced his way ahead for 54 yards to set up McKinney's four-yard score. Dietrich missed the extra point, as the scoring opened up at 6-0.
Two possessions later, Maritime milked a lot of time off of the clock with play crossing over into the second quarter. On the second play of the period, Caneparo darted into the end zone for a six-yard score. The extra point was good, as Maritime took a 13 point lead.
On the next possession, Maritime once again found the end zone after Knight forced a fumble and Alvora recovered the ball to give the Privateers great field position. The scoring play saw Kinney find the end zone for a two-yard score as Maritime moved ahead by 20 points.
The score remained at 20 at the halftime break with Gallaudet scheduled to receive the second half kickoff. On the opening drive of the half, Klass made his presence felt as he picked off the first play of the drive to give the Privateers possession at their own 32-yard line.
After another long drive off the interception, that saw Maritime use over seven and a half minutes of time. Dietrich sent his first field goal of the afternoon through the uprights from 25-yards out. After a pair of punts from sophomore John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) on the next two possessions the Privateers got the ball back with 10 seconds to go in the third and continued its possession into the final period.
On fourth and goal from the Gallaudet four yard line, Maritime decided to go for the knockout punch, already ahead by a large margin. However, Gardner was stopped for no gain and the Privateers gave the ball over on downs. The next Privateer possession resulted in points as Dietrich capped off the scoring with a 22-yard field goal to increase the lead to 26.
The Privateers ran out the clock on the final drive and had wrapped up its fourth win of the season overall, and third in conference play to finish the year with a 4-6 overall record and a 3-4 conference slate.
Earlier in the day, Husson defeated Mount Ida to clinch the ECFC Championship finishing two games ahead of Castleton State, Mount Ida, and Norwich, who all finished the season 5-2 in league contests.
