Maritime Suffers Season Opening Loss to William Paterson, 36-20

Box Score

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime Football team opened its 2014 season with a loss on Friday evening on the newly renovated Reinhart Field, falling to the William Paterson Pioneers by a score of 36-20.

Maritime was within striking distance by being down just four points at halftime; however the Privateers were outscored by a 26-7 margin in the third quarter as William Paterson ran away with the game late. The Privateers did close the contest out with a 14-0 run, to pull back within two possessions by the end of the contest.

"It's never as bad as you think it is," said 10th-year head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes. "We kind of fell apart in the beginning of the third quarter with some blunders and gave them four touchdowns."

"It's a tough loss, it hurts, but we'll regroup," he added. "We'll grow off these mistakes and look forward to the Chowder Bowl next week. I was proud of how we battled back at the end. It's a sign of good leadership."

On the offensive side of the ball, senior Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the way with 134 yards on the ground including a game-high 76 yard carry for a touchdown late in the third quarter. Classmate Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) also had a touchdown run for nine yards. Junior quarterback ended the night with 93 yards as well on his 24 carries.

Defensively, junior Kameron Knight (Clayton, N.C./West Johnson) led the team with nine tackles and also forced a fumble. Senior Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) collected eight tackles, as did classmates Chris Shehata (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and Andrew Auriemma (Melville, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Senior Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) had a sack for 11 yards, as he finished the evening with five wrap-ups.

The special teams unit broke a record, as junior placekicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) broke a Maritime record as he connected on a 49-yard field goal with less than two minutes to go in the opening half. The record broke Madison Leary's 47-yard boot against Western Connecticut in the 2011 season.

Sophomore John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) had a pair of punts pinned inside the opponent's 20-yard line, while also connected on a 50-yard kick to help put his defense in a better position. Freshman Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) averaged 61 yards per kickoff in his four attempts.

The night started out with the opening of the newly renovated Reinhart Field with members of the athletic staff and other school officials on hand to officially open the field for the 2014 season. Maritime then won the coin toss and deferred to the second half.

On the opening drive by the Pioneers, Maritime forced a fumble as Knight was able to knock the ball free and give the Privateers the ball. Maritime was able to pick up a first down on its first drive, but it stalled out as the team turned the ball over on downs. Three plays later, William Paterson was celebrating in the end zone as the Pioneers connected on a 65-yard pass to move ahead by a 7-0 score.

William Paterson held its lead into the second quarter and with under seven minutes left in the period added on with a 20-yard field goal to increase its lead to 10.

Maritime took over as Gardner and Chilcott chipped away at the field picking up two first downs along the way. With 1:49 left in the half, Dietrich set up for a 49-yard field goal and kicked a low but firm kick sailing through the uprights for the first Privateer points of the night.

On the next Pioneer possession, William Paterson was unable to execute one successful play as junior Brian Price (New York, N.Y./Wadleigh) picked the ball off in Pioneer territory to put Maritime back into scoring range. After a quick three downs, Dietrich was tasked with a simpler kick than earlier as he put up a 28-yard field goal to pull the Privateers within four heading to the halftime break.

After a quick three-and-out by Maritime, the Pioneers took over in the early going of the second half and collected a few fresh set of downs before a 17-yard sprint to the end zone expanded William Paterson's lead to 11. The Pioneers took advantage of a Maritime turnover on the next possession and darted into the end zone for a 23-6 advantage.

By the end of the third quarter the score was 36-13, with Maritime's lone highlight of the period coming on a 76-yard sprint to the end zone by Gardner for the first Privateer touchdown of the season.

The Privateers pulled closer with time working against them, as Caneparo found the end zone for his first score of the season on a nine-yard run, after Chilcott and sophomore Brett McKinney (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) helped set up the score.

Maritime attempted the onside kick with just under three minutes left to go, but Dietrich's kick on the kick off did not go the required 10 yards, and the Privateers were forced to give the ball over to William Paterson, who ran the clock out to end the game.

Overall, Maritime finished the game with 288 yards on offense all coming on the team's 58 rushing attempts. William Paterson collected 217 yards on the ground while also picking up 105 yards in the passing game.

Maritime (0-1, 0-0 ECFC) will have a quick turnaround as they play host to the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers on Thursday, September 11 at 7 p.m. The contest will be the 7th Annual Chowder Bowl as the Privateers look to regain bragging rights after falling in last season's season opener to the Buccaneers.

The game will also be Hero Appreciation Night, as the team and staff will honor those who serve in all military branches, as well as the New York Police Department, Fire Department of New York, and the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey.

William Paterson will open up its 2014 home slate with a non-conference contest against Bridgewater State at Wightman Stadium in Wayne, N.J. next weekend.
