Nico Santiago named to CoSIDA Football Academic All-District first team

ASHINGTON – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its 2014 Capital One Academic All-District Teams for football and Gallaudet University senior linebacker Nico Santiago (Moorestown, N.J.) was named to the District Two team for Division III. Santiago will now be added to the national ballot for the chance to receive Academic All-American honors, which will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Santiago in five games for the Bison has accumulated 16 tackles (eight solo); one pass breakup and one fumble recovery that gave GU the victory over Becker College. The co-captain's season was cut short due to a season-ending injury but he remains as a leader on the sideline for the team.

This is Santiago's second award of the season as he was nominated as National Football Foundation (NFF) Candidate for the NFF National-Scholar Athlete Awards back on Sept. 25.

To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. District Two is comprised of Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and West Virginia.

CoSIDA began this program in the 1950s, and since then, has honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous sports and across all divisions with these elite Capital One Academic All-America scholar-athlete honors. Currently, CoSIDA honors Academic All-Americans in 12 sports.

The Academic All-District teams include the student-athletes listed per sport and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the second year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.

The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2014-15 DII and DIII Academic All-America teams program.
