Husson Wins Thriller in Overtime Over Alfred St.

BANGOR, ME – Joe Seccareccia's (Bangor, ME) two-yard touchdown plunge in the first overtime propelled the Husson University football team to a 34-28 win over Alfred State on Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex. Husson improves to 1-1 on the season while Alfred State falls to 0-3.

Seccareccia finished the game 24-35 for 251 yards and a pair of scores. Deon Wiggins(Bridgeport, CT) notched a game-high 99 yards receiving on eight catches and a score.Ryan Stroud (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) added eight catches for 81 yards and a score whileStephan Dance (New London, CT) made a key interception in overtime to set up the winning score.

The Eagles got on the board first as Kyle McKinnon (New London, CT) completed a 9-play, 66-yard drive with a 10-yard scoring run with 3:33 left in the first quarter.

Alfred State answered as Erik Simmons caught a nine-yard pass from Ben Wilkerson, but the Eagles blocked the point after to keep a one-point edge.

Wiggins expanded the Eagles' lead when he made a great diving grab in the back left corner of the endzone off a 32-yard pass from Seccareccia midway through the second quarter.

Rasheed Williams answered for the Pioneers 31 seconds later as he rushed 75 yards for the score and Husson went into halftime with a 14-13 lead.

Stroud caught a 22-yard pass to give the Eagles a 21-13 lead going into the fourth, but Simmons caught touchdown passes of 13 and 35 yards and the Pioneers converted a two-point conversion to take a 28-21 lead with 8:31 left in regulation.

The Eagles answered with an 11-play, 62-yard drive capped by a Logan Steward(Hampden, ME) five-yard score to knot the game with 3:45 remaining.

The Pioneers had a chance to win the game with 15 seconds left, but a 41-yard field goal attempt went wide left.

On the opening drive in overtime, Dance picked off a the Pioneer pass at the two-yardline, giving the ball to the Eagles and setting up Seccareccia's game-winning touchdown.

Dance finished with a game-high 11 tackles, including the 300th of his career, and the interception while Ellis Throckmorton (Bangor, ME) added seven tackles, including two tackles-for-loss.

Williams led Alfred State with 234 yards rushing and a score. Wilkerson threw for 175 yards and three scores with a pair of interceptions.

Husson out-gained Alfred State 408 yards to 403.

The Eagles return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they host Norwich at 1 p.m.
