THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime football team hosted the Becker Hawks on Reinhart Field this Saturday, and knocked off the Hawks by a score of 13-6 in front of the 2014 Homecoming Crowd.
The defense led the way for Maritime as the Privateers recovered three fumbles and also had an interception. The third fumble recovery came late in the game to seal the victory for Maritime. Senior Duke Alvora (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) had a career day with a team-best 10 tackles and also had a forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Freshman Nick Conte (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) also had a pair of fumble recoveries, while senior Nick Coffiey (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) had the team's interception to go along with four stops.
Senior Hugh O'Brien (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) and freshman Craig Hinrichs (Islip, N.Y./Islip) also forced fumbles, while the pair also got credit for one sack apiece. Both O'Brien and sophomore Eric Wallace (West Point, N.Y./James O'Neill) were second on the team with eight tackles each.
The offense was led by seniors Greg Caneparo (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) and Kyle Gardner (Amityville N.Y./St. Anthony's), as Caneparo ended the afternoon with 37 yards on the ground to go along with his 48-yards receiving, including his 27-yard touchdown reception. Gardner ended the game with a team-best 60 yards rushing, while junior quarterback Zack Chilcott (Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston) had 41 yards on the ground to go along with his 90 yards of passing through the air. Junior Vincent Jones (Cudjoe Key, Fla./Key West), along with sophomore Nick Fischetti (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Brian Leonard (Selden, N.Y./Centereach) each had one reception on the game.
Junior placekicker Diogo Dietrich (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/DePaul Catholic) accounted for seven of Maritime's 13 points on the afternoon, as he connected on a pair of field goals from 27 and 35 yards away, and added an extra point. Freshman Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had his four kickoffs accumulate 223 yards, for an average of 55 yards. Sophomore punter John Arny (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) had five punts for 192 yards, including a pair pinned deep inside the Becker 20-yard line.
"I'm proud of the way our team played," commented head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes after the win. "We put on a good show for the homecoming crowd. Give credit to our defense for really controlling the game with the takeaways, and also Diogo [Dietrich] and the rest of special teams for having a solid game."
After the Maritime defense forced a quick 3-and-out on the opening drive, the Privateer offense got to work starting with an 18-yard run for Caneparo off the right corner as he jetted upfield. Later on the drive Chilcott connected with Jones for a 14-yard gain, which eventually set up a 27-yard Dietrich kick to put Maritime ahead by a 3-0 score.
The Privateers then turned the ball over on downs, followed by a Maritime punt on the next Privateer possession to give Becker the ball back to start the second quarter.
The Hawks drove down the field on its next series, to set up a 36-yard field goal attempt that went just wide of the upright to keep the Privateers ahead by three. Neither side was able to do much more offensively in the half, as both the Maritime defense picked up a fumble, while the Hawk defense picked off a Chilcott pass but were unable to do anything with the ball.
As the game shifted to the second half, Maritime got the ball back as the offense went back to work. The drive began with a completion to Leonard, followed by long runs by both Chilcott and Gardner. On 1st-and-10 from the Becker 27-yard line, Chilcott complete a pass to Caneparo, who sniffed out the end zone for the first Privateer touchdown on the day to make the score 10-0 after the Dietrich extra point.
Becker came back on the next drive, as the Hawks used a pair of 12-yard plays on the drive to help set up a 4-yard touchdown run to pull the Hawks within four. On the ensuing extra point, junior Beau Warrington (Milford, Del./Sussex Technical) found his way around the Becker offensive line and blocked the extra point.
Senior Chris Klass (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet) made his presence felt on the next kickoff as the senior made his way from one sideline to the other, and picked up a 40-yard kickoff return to set up the Privateers with a 1st and 10 from the Privateer 46-yard line. However, the Maritime offense stalled out after three plays and Arny was forced to punt once again, knocking the kick out of bounds at the 11-yard line.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Becker fumbled the ball once again with Maritime picking up the ball. Maritime was forced to punt on the next drive, giving Becker the ball back. On 3rd and 8, Becker dropped back to pass, with Coffiey reading the eyes of the quarterback, he intercepted and returned the ball for 10 yards to put Maritime's offense back on the field with 8:52 left in the game.
Dietrich put his leg to work once again, as he connected on a 35-yard field goal attempt to put Maritime ahead by seven points. Becker got the ball back after Murphy's kickoff was fair caught at the 26-yard line. After a short two-yard pickup, the Hawks connected on a 20-yard pass that was then fumbled and picked up by the Privateers with just 3:35 to go in the game.
Becker tried to stop the clock using all three of its timeouts on defense, but Gardner picked up a pair of huge first downs on the drive to ice the game and give Maritime its second conference win in as many weeks.
Maritime (3-4, 2-2 ECFC) will take on Castleton State next weekend in Rutland, Vt. as the Privateers and Spartans will kick off at 12 p.m. from Spartan Stadium. Becker (0-7, 0-4 ECFC) will continue its road trip with a stop at Mount Ida next weekend for a 1 p.m. start.
