BANGOR, ME – John Smith (Fayetville, GA) had 126 yards on the ground and two scores and Stephan Dance (New London, CT) made a game-high 14 tackles to lead the Husson University football team to a 20-10 win over Norwich on Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Sports Complex. With the win, Husson improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in ECFC play while Norwich falls to 2-2 and 0-1 in league play.
The Eagles converted on their first drive of the game, marching 95 yards and scoring when Smith rushed from 14 yards out for the touchdown. Husson quarterback Joe Seccareccia(Bangor, ME) made a key, 35-yard pass play to Deon Wiggins to set the tone for the drive.
Norwich would get on the board when Wesley Medeiros kicked home a 41-yard field goal with 2:35 left in the first quarter, but Logan Steward (Hampden, ME) capped off a 5-play, 70-yard drive with a 17 yard touchdown rush to give the Eagles a 13-3 lead after the first quarter.
Husson took a 20-3 lead at halftime as Smith rushed it in from 11 yards to finish off a 2-play, 29-yard drive with 4:41 left in the second quarter.
Norwich cut the lead to 20-10 with 2:55 left in the third when Keyen Foley ran it in from seven yards out, but the Eagles' defense wouldn't give up anything else as the Cadets could not reach Husson territory in the final quarter.
Ellis Throckmorton (Bangor, ME) added 11 tackles and an interception for the Husson defense while Anderson Smith (Brooklyn, NY) and Jordan Hersom (Turner, ME) also had interceptions.
Smith rushed his 126 yards on 17 carries to go with the two scores while Steward rushed 20 times for 79 yards and the touchdown. Wiggins finished with four catches for 83 yards to lead the receiving corps for the Eagles.
Austin Roberts led Norwich with 10 tackles and an interception.
The Eagles held the Cadets to 134 yards of total offense while racking up 356 yards, including 184 on the ground.
Husson returns to the gridiron on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kick-off at SUNY-Maritime.
