THROGGS NECK, NY - The Husson University football team shut out SUNY Maritime by the score of 40-0 on Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field. Husson improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference play while Maritime falls to 1-4 and 0-2 in conference play.
John Smith (Fayetville, GA) gave the Eagles the lead when he broke a run for a 60-yard score with 7:05 left in the first quarter.
Less than two minutes later, Kyle McKinnon (New London, CT) rushed it in from seven yards out to give the Eagles a 13-0 lead. The touchdown was set up by Ellis Throckmorton (Bangor, ME) who recovered a fumble at the Maritime 15-yardline.
The defense then got in on the scoring with Luke Washburn (Litchfield, ME) returning a fumble 21 yards for the score.
Smith notched his second score of the game when he completed a 10-play, 59-yard drive with a 10-yard rush with just under five minutes to play.
Washburn recovered another fumble deep in Maritime territory and Joe Seccareccia(Bangor, ME) capped the first half scoring after with a four-yard rush to put Husson up 33-0 at half.
Shabashe McIntosh (Bridgeport, CT) finished the scoring when he returned a punt 55 yards for a score as the third quarter ran out.
Smith finished the day with 153 yards rushing on 20 carries and the two scores while Seccareccia added 51 yards on nine yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles' defense held Maritime to 97 total yards while racking up 304 yards.
Husson continues play on Saturday when the Eagles host Gallaudet at 1 p.m.
Notes: The 40 points are the most for Husson since the 2010 season...The Eagles' defense gave up a school-record low of 1.8 yards per play.
