ALFRED, NY – The Husson University football team fell in a hard-fought contest to Alfred by the score of 34-17 in its season-opener on Saturday afternoon in Alfred, NY. Husson is 0-1 on the year while Alfred goes to 1-0.
Alfred scored first a minute into the second quarter when quarterback Tyler Johnson found tight end Isiah Young for a 26-yard score.
However, Husson's Shabashe McIntosh (Bridgeport, CT) took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for the score to knot the game at seven.
Johnson would pass for two more scores and Alfred took a 20-7 lead with less than eight minutes left in the first half.
The Eagles would eventually take possession with just over a minute remaining, and marched 50 yards as Josh Gray (Bucksport, ME) kicked a 28-yard field goal as time expired to make it 20-10 at halftime.
Alfred took a 27-10 lead five minutes into the third quarter on another Johnson touchdown throw, but Husson would again cut into the lead when Logan Steward (Hampden, ME) completed a 14-play, 54-yard drive with a two-yard plunge.
The Eagles continued to battle but Alfred scored a late touchdown to seal the game.
Husson quarterback Joe Seccareccia (Bangor, ME) went 15-for-39 for 134 yards and an interception. Stephan Dance (New London, CT) led the Eagles defense with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Ellis Throckmorton (Bangor, ME) added nine tackles and 2.0 tackles-for-loss.
Johnson led Alfred with 297 yards through the air and five touchdowns. Alfred outgained Husson 439-185.
The Eagles return to the gridiron for their home-opener on Saturday, Sept. 20 against Alfred St. Kickoff is at 12 p.m.
