Barnes Named To Division III Football Preseason All-America  Second Team Defense By Consensus Draft Services

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (June 21, 2011) – On Monday, Maritime rising-junior Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was named to the Consensus Draft Services’ Preseason All-American Second Team Defense, becoming the first Privateer football player to be named an All-American since the program was reinstated for the 2006 season.

Barnes was the 2010 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) Defensive Player of the Year after a phenomenal season for Maritime. He led the team and conference in tackles with 116 (75 solo and 41 assisted), which set a modern day school record for tackles in a season. He also had a team-high 17 tackles for combined losses of 66 yards, including three sacks. He also had one interception with a 45 yard return.

The linebacker also had four quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, defended two passes and broke up one. He was a major contributor to the Privateers’ defense being ranked 24th in the nation in total defense with only 266.09 yards allowed per game. Individually, he was tied for 28th amongst Division III defenders in tackles per game (10.55) and tied for 29th in tackles for loss per game (1.55).

Barnes and the rest of the SUNY Maritime football team will kick off the 2011 season on the road at NCAA Division II opponent Bentley University under the lights on Friday, September 2, at the Falcons’ Football Stadium in Waltham, Mass. at 7 p.m.
