Brozowski, Carpenter Lead Spartans to Win

CASTLETON, Vt. – Juniors Shane Brozowski (Rensselaer, N.Y.) and Tyler Carpenter (Fort Edward, N.Y.) helped give eight Castleton State College seniors a warm send off from their final career home game at Spartan Stadium, combining for five touchdowns as the Spartans downed visiting Husson University 40-20 in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) action.

Brozowski threw for 312 yards and three scores, completing 25-of-31 attempts with no interceptions. Carpenter had a pair of scores, rushing 14 times for 98 yards, including a 45 yard bruising run that set up a first-quarter score.

Quarterback Kash Keezer (Veazie, Maine) led the Husson offense, rushing for 129 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, while completing 10-of-29 passes for 71 yards and a pair of scores. Ryan Dorso (Farmingdale, Maine) went over the century mark on the ground as well, piling up 111 yards on 16 carries, while Andre Anderson (Bloomfield, Conn) added 89 yards on 14 carries.

Castleton raced out to a 6-0 lead taking the opening drive 66 yards on seven plays, capped by a Carpenter plunge from one yard out. Dave Fox's (Troy, N.Y.) extra point try was blocked to keep the score at 6-0.

After a pair of three-and-outs for both teams, Husson put together a lengthy 13-play, 48-yard drive down to the Castleton 10 yard line. Castleton's Todd Carr (Ticonderoga, N.Y.) came up with a pair of huge tackles to keep the Eagles at bay, forcing a Doug Dieuvieul (Veazie, Maine) field goal attempt that was blocked by Josh Osborne (Island Heights, N.J.).

Castleton took over at their own 20-yard line, and after Carpenter busted out for 45 yards, Brozowski connected with Mike Patterson (Jackson, N.J.) on a bubble screen that the sophomore wide-out took 35 yards to the house. Patterson was freed on a perfect block from tight end Adam Farmer (South Burlington, Vt.), and Patterson did the rest, weaving his way to pay dirt. This time Fox was good on the PAT to make it 13-0.

The Spartans stretched the lead to 20-0 on another Carpenter touchdown, capping a 10-play, 66-yard drive. The scoring play was set up b a 25-yard strike from Brozowski to Brandon Boyle (Springfield, Vt.) on fourth down.

Husson got on the board with 12 unanswered points, scoring with 10 seconds left in the first half on a Keezer-to-Jack Hersom (Sidney, Maine) 14-yard touchdown and again on the opening drive on a Keezer keeper from eight yards out. Dieuvieul's PAT kick was blocked on the former and Keezer could not find the endzone when the Eagles attempted the two-point conversion on the latter.

It was as close as the Eagles would come, as Castleton posted a pair of touchdowns to close out the third quarter. Brozowski found Boyle on a six-yard touchdown pass, and later scrambled in from seven yards out to push the lead to 33-12.

Keezer found Shabashe McIntosh (Bridgeport, Conn.) from six yards out, and Brozowski hooked up with Zach Waitkus (Stafford Springs, Conn.) to round out the game's scoring.

Boyle caught a game-high nine passes for 109 yards, while Patterson finished with 76 yards on five catches and Waitkus added 62 yards on four catches.

Stephen Dance (New London, Conn.) led the Eagle defense with 13 tackles and a sack, while Chris Dalecki (South Berwick, Maine) added five tackles, a sack and a pair of quarterback hurries.

Osborne had a team-high 11 tackles for the Spartans, while Carr added 10 and Josh Sparveri (Coventry, Conn.) added four pass break ups.

Husson remains winless at 0-9, 0-6 while Castleton ups its record to 4-5, 3-3. Both teams wrap up their respective seasons next Saturday as Husson hosts Anna Maria at 1 pm and Castleton travels to Mount Ida for a noon kick-off.
