SUNY Maritime Powers Past Becker

Leicester, Mass.- SUNY Maritime used a 37 point second half to defeat Becker College 47-19 in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference action on Saturday evening.

The Privateers got the scoring started when Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla.) nailed a 46 yard field goal, putting Maritime in front 3-0. Becker answered back on their very next possession, taking the ball 70 yards on just seven plays. The drive was capped off by a Kyle Gregg (Charlotte, N.C.) 12 yard touchdown run. After the failed extra point attempt the Hawks held a 6-3 lead.

The score remained the same until 1:33 into the second quarter when Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla.) put Maritime in front with a 14 yard touch rush, giving the Privateers a 10-6 edge. The two defenses held their ground for the rest of the half as Maritime took a 10-6 lead into the break.

The Privateers wasted little time widening their lead as Fritz Jean took the opening kickoff 75 yards for the touchdown, putting Maritime in front 17-6.  The Hawks answered back with 9:26 remaining in the third quarter when Bobby Baker (Monroe, Conn.) connected with DeMon Frazier (Arcadia, LA.) for an 80 yard touchdown completion. After a missed two point conversation attempt the Privateers advantage was cut to 17-12.

Maritime responded on their next possession when quarterback Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) completed a 58 yard touchdown pass to Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y.), putting the Privateers in front for good at 24-12.

After Maritime forced Becker to punt on their next possession, the Privateers took the ball 49 yards on seven plays. The drive was capped by a two yard touchdown down scamper by Tyler Trodden, giving the visitors a commanding 30-12 lead.

Maritime added to their lead early in the fourth quarter when Tyler Trodden found Thomas Davis again, this time for a 63 yard touchdown pass. Madison Leary added a 39 yard field goal and Gary Bigham (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored from a yard out to complete the scoring for the Privateers.

Becker added a late touchdown when Bobby Baker teamed up with Corinthian Bostic (Jacksonville, Fla.) on 45 yard touchdown pass. Baker finished the day with a game high 259 passing yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Gregg led all rushers with 59 yards on 21 carries.

The Hawks were led on defense by Rafael Martinez (Springfield, Mass.) who had a team high seven tackles. Asante Harris (Charlotte, N.C.) and Dominick Whitley (Springfield, Mass.) each had an interception for Becker. The loss drops the Hawks to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the ECFC. Becker returns to action next Saturday when they host ECFC opponent Castleton State at 4 p.m.

Maritime was powered on offense by Thomas Davis who had two receptions for a game high 121 yards, including two touchdowns. The Privateers defense was carried by Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y.) who had game high 10 tackles. Rob Gorgy (Hillsborough, N.J.) kept the pressure on the Hawks, tallying three sacks on the evening. Steve Roman (Staten Island, N.Y.) added an interception in the victory. The Privateers record now stands at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECFC. Maritime will return home next week when they host Anna Maria at 2p.m.
