Season Preview

The Maritime Football team is coming off a record breaking 2009 campaign in which they garnered their first winning season with a 6-4 record and finished one game out of the inaugural Eastern Collegiate Football Conference championship match. In 2010, the Privateers will look to build upon this success and are again poised to contend for the championship crown.

Offense: The nations 4th ranked rushing offense in 2009 will have to replace three All-Conference Offensive Linemen but has several experienced backups to plug in beside All-Conference senior Frank Adamo. Fullback, Jamie Spanopoulos, who finished the season ranked 5th nationally in scoring returns for his junior campaign along with an experience group of skill position players that includes twin brothers John and Anthony Gagliano at running back and quarterback respectively.

Defense: The Privateers return an experienced and stingy group that finished in the nation’s top 10 in Pass Defense, 1st Down Defense and Red Zone Defense in 2009. They will have to replace the leadership of graduating All-Conference Linebacker, Michael Oehl, but have seniors, Vinny Dima (defensive line) and Steve Roman (Strong Safety) along with five other All-Conference returners to fill the bill.

Special Teams: The 2010 squad will again have the benefit of the strong leg of senior Madison Leary who led the Kick Off squad to a national ranking of 24th in 2009. The team will need to improve on extra point and field goal accuracy in 2010 and will also need to find a replacement at punter to help win the field position battle.

Schedule: The Privateers will look to remain undefeated against industry rivals Massachusetts Maritime and USMMA-King’s Point and have added Western Connecticut out of the New Jersey Athletic Conference to round out the non conference schedule. The Homecoming game against Husson College on September 25th will start the conference championship race and each week will present a must win game to stay in contention for the conference crown.
