MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) weekly awards were announced for games through Sunday, September 5th. Castleton University teammates Chris Rice (Bethel, Conn.) and Noah Crossman (Rutland, Vt.) took home Defensive and Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively. Dean College’s Errol Breaux (Baton Rouge, La.) earned Offensive Player of the Week while Alfred State’s Joel Smith (Livonia, N.Y.) was named Rookie of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week
Errol Breaux - Dean College
(Senior, WR – Baton Rouge, La.)
Breaux set a Dean record for most touchdowns in a game by scoring all six in Saturday's season opening 42-6 victory over Fitchburg State. Breaux finished with eight receptions for 247 yards and five touchdowns. He added a 4-yard touchdown run. The senior wide out had TD catches of 10 yards, 36 yards, 38 yards, 57 yards and 71 yards.
Defensive Player of the Week
Chris Rice – Castleton University
(Senior, DL - Bethel, Conn.)
Rice had a dominant opening week, racking up 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for a loss against Plymouth State on Saturday. The reigning ECFC Defensive Player of the Year picked up where he left off, making a game-high nine tackles and disrupting plays from the opening snap. Rice and the rest of the Spartans’ front-7 forced Plymouth into four three-and-outs and held the Panthers to just 52 yards rushing into a 13-0 shutout at Dave Wolk Stadium.
Rookie of the Week
Joel Smith – Alfred State
(Freshman, LB - Livonia, N.Y.)
Smith led the Pioneers with 12 tackles (8 solo) in the season opener. Four of his tackles were for a loss of 19 yards.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Noah Crossman – Castleton University
(Junior, K- Rutland, Vt.)
Crossman was perfect kicking on the day, knocking home both of his field goal attempts and his only extra-point try in a 13-0 win over Plymouth State. The junior buried kicks from 26 and 34 yards to put Castleton ahead 6-0 in the first half and added the point-after on Castleton's second-half touchdown.
