FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OCTOBER 10th, 2016

MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) weekly awards were announced for games through Sunday, October 9th.  Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y.) of Maritime (N.Y.) was named Offensive Player of the Week, while teammates Liam Bailey (Sayville, N.Y) and Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y.) earned Rookie of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week honors, respectively.  Castleton University’s Darren Callan (Fairfield, Vt.) earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades for his performance over the weekend.

Offensive Player of the Week

Thomas Wright – Maritime (N.Y.)
(Junior, QB – Wantagh, N.Y.)

Junior quarterback Thomas Wright helped re-write the Maritime record book on Saturday in the team's 22-0 win over Anna Maria. The junior threw for 294 yards to set a new record in Maritime's 11-year history, his 18 completions is also second all-time to his own record set earlier this year with 21 completions. Wright was responsible for both of Maritime's touchdowns as he rushed for one, and later threw for another. On the day, Wright also completed his longest pass of the season, and his career with a 40-yard hookup.

Defensive Player of the Week

Darren Callan – Castleton University
(Senior, LB – Fairfield, Vt.)

Callan set a new Castleton record for total tackles in a single game, earning 21 total tackles as the Spartans defeated Mount Ida on the road, 26-14, Saturday afternoon. He also added one tackle for a loss and one pass breakup. With the game scoreless at the start of the second quarter and Mount Ida in Castleton territory, Callan stuffed a run by Gary Deanley on fourth down to force the Mustangs to turn the ball over on downs. He was part of a Castleton defense that forced four turnovers and stopped Mount Ida on all four fourth down conversions it attempted. Callan finished with eight more tackles in the game than any other player on either team. Callan remains first in the ECFC with 15.8 tackles per game, and he has moved into second place on Castleton's career tackles list with 276, just 32 tackles away from the top spot.

Rookie of the Week

Liam Bailey - Maritime (N.Y.)
(Freshman, LB - Sayville, N.Y.)

Freshman Liam Bailey helped Maritime's defensive efforts on Saturday afternoon as the Privateer defense held Anna Maria to a program-record 20 yards on total offense. Bailey tied a season-high with four solo tackles. Three of his four tackles came for a loss of nine yards, for the first three TFLs of his career. Bailey also recorded the first sack of his career for a loss of seven yards as well as one pass breakup.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Matthew Murphy – Maritime (N.Y.)
(Junior, K – Seaford, N.Y.)

For the second straight week, junior Matthew Murphy set his personal best for longest field goal as he converted on a 46-yard attempt to open the scoring in Maritime's 22-0 victory over Anna Maria. In addition to his 46-yard conversion, Murphy also made two more field goals from 39 and 35 yards out. His 46-yard field goal is tied for the fifth longest kick in program history. His 10 points on the afternoon gives him a team-leading 33 points, which is third highest amongst all ECFC players. In terms of kickoffs, Murphy booted the ball six times for 347 yards, for an average distance of 57.0 yards; four out of his five kickoffs were inside Anna Maria's eight-yard line.
