Cadets Overwhelmed By St. Lawrence, 52-0

CANTON, N.Y. – The Norwich University football team lost to the host Saints from St. Lawrence University by a 52-0 margin Saturday afternoon at Leckonby Stadium. Norwich (0-2) remains winless in its two games while St. Lawrence (2-0) secured its second-straight shutout win.

Norwich yielded 21 first-quarter points en route to the defeat, its first shutout loss of more than 50 points since a 66-0 loss to Union (N.Y.) on Nov. 5, 1991. The Saints limited the Cadets to only four first downs on the afternoon, holding Norwich to negative rushing figures.

On the afternoon, St. Lawrence generated 475 total yards of offense while holding the Cadets to only 44 cumulative yards. Junior quarterback Philippe Bazinet (Otterburn Park, Quebec, Canada) converted only four of his 16 passes, throwing a first-quarter interception before finishing his afternoon with 36 aerial yards.

Saints quarterback Sean Richardson threw for three first-quarter touchdowns, elevating his team to the 21-0 lead before Nick Frenger finished off a 10-yard run to precede an Andrew Carvalho point-after, creating a 28-0 deficit. Daly Hebert would kick a 39-yard field goal, creating a 31-0 halftime advantage for the hosts.

Richardson would throw for two additional touchdowns in the second half, hooking up with Mitch Gallagher before connecting with Vincenzo Ferraro on a 59-yard pass. The final St. Lawrence score came off a fumble by Norwich that found its way into the end zone – Chris Ryan picked up the loose ball for the team's seventh touchdown of the afternoon.

A highlight for Norwich came off the foot of senior Wesley Medeiros (Gilford, N.H.), as a third-quarter punt of his traveled 52 yards, a career-long boot. Senior captain Benjamin Hummer (Annapolis, Md.) led the defensive corps with eight total tackles while first-year Michael Corinna (Milford, Mass.) earned his first career interception in the second quarter.

Norwich will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 17 as it hosts WPI at 2 p.m. on Homecoming Weekend. For more information regarding Homecoming 2016, visi thttp://alumni.norwich.edu/homecoming.
