FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 3RD, 2016
MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) weekly awards were announced for games through Sunday, October 2nd. John Smith (Fayettesville, Ga.) of Husson University was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Castleton University’s Jakob Trautwein (Middlebury, Vt.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. Dwayne Hunter-Parker (Waterbury, Conn.) of Mount Ida College and Tyler Bassett (Dracut, Mass.) of Husson University earned Rookie of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively, for their performances over the weekend.
Offensive Player of the Week
John Smith – Husson University
(Junior, RB - Fayetteville, Ga.)
Smith put together his 11th straight 100-plus-yard game, and his 15th career multi-touchdown performance in Husson's 33-12 victory at SUNY Maritime, with 28 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while catching two passes for 58 yards out of the backfield, becoming the first player in program history to surpass 4,000 career all-purpose yards. In a 35-0 win over Alfred State last weekend, Smith had 153 rushing yards in addition to a 21 yard reception. The Fayetteville, Ga. native became the school's all-time career leader in rushing attempts with 641 and total offense with 3,891.
Defensive Player of the Week
Jakob Trautwein – Castleton University
(Junior, LB - Middlebury, Vt.)
Trautwein led a stingy Castleton defense that allowed just one touchdown in the Spartans' 23-13 victory over Anna Maria in the ECFC opener for both squads. On the third play of the game, he collected his first career interception and returned it 18 yards, leading to a Spartan field goal that gave the home team a lead it would never relinquish. Dating back to the season finale last year, Trautwein has picked up at least 10 total tackles in five straight games, earning a career-high 17 tackles against the AMCATS. He is second in the ECFC with 13.0 tackles per game, behind only teammate Darren Callan. The 52 tackles Trautwein has earned so far in 2016 equals the number of total tackles he had coming into this season through 15 games he had appeared in.
Rookie of the Week
Dwayne Hunter-Parker - Mount Ida College
(Freshman, DB - Waterbury, Conn.)
Hunter-Parker picked off a pair of passes and broke up another as the Mustangs earned their first ever win at Norwich, 15-14. The freshman defensive back also made seven tackles, one of them for a loss of three yards.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Tyler Bassett – Husson University
(Sophomore, P/WR - Dracut, Mass.)
Against SUNY Maritime on Saturday, Bassett averaged 38.3 yards per punt to help Husson win the battle of field possession. He pinned two of his six punts inside the 20, while carrying the ball twice for three yards and catching two passes for 31 yards with a long of 25. In a 35-0 win over Alfred State last weekend, Bassett punted three times for 116 yards for an average of 38.7 yards per punt with two punts inside the 20, while rushing three times for 30-yards with a long of 17.
