Bulldogs, Head Coach Andrae Murphy Get First Win with 36-35 Overtime Triumph at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. – October 22, 2022 – The Dean College football team earned its first win of the season with a thrilling 36-35 overtime victory at Alfred State in an Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) contest on Saturday.

The win is also the first for 2007 alumnus head coach Andrae Murphy.

Dean (1-6, 1-2 ECFC) plays at Maritime (N.Y.) next Saturday at 2 p.m. Alfred State drops to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the ECFC.

Junior Mozes Mooney (San Diego, Calif.) completed 28-of-34 passes for 295, three touchdowns and a pick. He also had two rushing touchdowns. Senior Quintus Reid (New Haven, Conn.) hauled in 11 catches for 152 yards and two scores. Junior Jordan Mason (Stockbridge, Ga.) added nine catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.

On the defensive side for the Bulldogs, senior Tyzohn Poole (New Haven, Conn.) posted 10 total tackles. Des Dias (Rochester, Mass.) had eight tackles, two for loss, and a pick. First-year Brandon Lane (Valdosta, Ga.) finished with six tackles, a forced fumble, an interception, and a pass breakup.  

Jake Palmer (Albany, N.Y.) gobbled up 271 yards on the ground with three scores to lead the Pioneers. Justin Horvath (Grand Island, N.Y.) went 11-29 for 275 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. He added a rushing touchdown. Roman Napoleon (Allegany, N.Y.) caught three balls for 104 yards and a score.

The Pioneers took the lead early in the first quarter, on a 1-yard run by Justin Horvath. Dean answered with a Quintus Reid 25-yard TD reception and a 1-yard Mooney run to lead 14-7 after 15 minutes.  

In the second quarter, Jake Palmer had a 7-yard run for a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14. The Bulldogs went back on top by a score when Jordan Mason hauled in an 18-yard pass from Mooney with 44 seconds left in the half. The Pioneers responded quickly with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Horvath to Roman Napoleon with three seconds showing on the clock.

After a scoreless third quarter, the home team took its first lead when Palmer broke off a 68-yard touchdown run. In the waning moments of regulation, Dean drove the length of the field to tie the score on a Mooney run from three yards out.

On the first overtime possession, Alfred State's Palmer ran in for a 9-yard TD. With the extra point, the Pioneers led 35-28.

On the ensuing Dean possession, Mooney hooked up with Reid for a 22-yard catch in the end zone to pull the Bulldogs within one. Dean kept its offense on the field to go for the win. Mooney was flushed out of the pocket but found Jordan Mason in the flat who crossed the goal line for the game-winning conversion.
