Privateers Held In Check By William Paterson

THROGGS NECK, NY – The Maritime College football team concluded its non-conference schedule on Saturday afternoon by welcoming William Paterson to Reinhart Field.  It was a tight game throughout, but the Pioneers (3-1) used a late touchdown to take a 14-3 lead.  Maritime's next drive stalled at midfield, allowing William Paterson to close out the win over the Privateers (1-3).

William Paterson fumbled the opening kickoff and it was recovered by Maritime with excellent field position.  The Privateers marched down the field and had a 1st-and-goal before William Paterson's Samod Wingo forced a fumble that the Pioneers recovered deep in their own territory.

After the teams traded punts, William Paterson got the ball back at its own 17 with 3:43 left in the first quarter.  The Pioneers kept the ball for 7:52, driving 83 yards in 15 plays, capped by Nazir Dale's 18-yard touchdown run.  Maritime responded with a 12-play, 55-yard drive that stalled at the William Paterson 8.  Michael Trupiano (Kings Park, NY) booted a 25-yard field goal that made it 7-3 with 4:56 left in the first half.

It was a 7-3 game at halftime, and Maritime received the second half kickoff.  The Privateers got to the William Paterson 5, but were unable to punch it in and the Pioneers took over.  However, Sergio Borda (Toms River, NJ) intercepted a Simon Condemi pass on the ensuing William Paterson possession, giving the ball right back to Maritime.  The Pioneers forced a 3-and-out, though, sending the game into the fourth quarter with the score still 7-3.

In the fourth quarter, William Paterson went on an 11-play, 72-yard drive that ate up 6:45 of game time.  Amier Alford's 10-yard touchdown run increased the Pioneers' advantage to 14-3 with 5:31 to go, and William Paterson's defense stopped the Privateers on their ensuing possession.  Maritime used all three of its timeouts, but the Pioneers converted a 4th-and-1 to ice the win.

Steven Stassi (East Islip, NY) had a nice game throwing the ball.  He finished 19-for-24 for 147 yards.  Tate Niederer (Hanover, PA) carried 15 times for 38 yards, while Ian Derda (Guilford, CT) gained 50 receiving yards on six catches.  He also had 72 kickoff return yards.  Borda tied for the team lead with 10 tackles to go along with his interception.  Justin Goodwin (Levittown, NY) made 10 tackles, as well.

For the Pioneers, Dale carried 29 times for 173 yards and a touchdown.  Alford gained 99 yards on 14 rushes, and he also scored once.  Overall, William Paterson accumulated 276 yards on the ground.  Condemi was just 3-for-8 passing for 31 yards and two interceptions.  Alajuwon Bell paced the Pioneers with 11 tackles, while Nazier Wright had eight tackles and two sacks.

Maritime (0-0 ECFC) is off next week, then begins Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) play on Oct. 8, when defending ECFC champion Anna Maria (2-1, 0-0 ECFC) visits Reinhart Field for a 1 p.m. matchup.  The Privateers will end the season with six straight ECFC games.
