MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) weekly awards were announced for games through Sunday, September 29th. Gallaudet teammates Timel Benton (Columbia, S.C.), Stefan Anderson (New Market, Md.), and Cassmeir Hutchinson (Chesapeake, Va.) were named Offensive Player of the Week, Rookie of the Week, and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively. Castleton’s Chris Rice (Bethel, Conn.) earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Offensive Player of the Week
Timel Benton – Gallaudet University
(Junior, QB – Columbia, S.C.)
Benton threw for a career-high three touchdown passes last Saturday at home in a heart-breaking 27-25 loss to Greensboro College. Benton had touchdown passes of 17-, 15- and 22-yards in the game. He completed 6 of 10 passes for 129 yards with a long pass of 55 yards. His passing efficiency was 267.4.
Defensive Player of the Week
Chris Rice – Castleton University
(Junior, DL - Bethel, Conn.)
Rice had a monster week against unbeaten Norwich, racking up four tackles for a loss and three sacks in addition to a forced fumble, fumble recovery and a defensive touchdown. Rice's three sacks set a program record for most in a single game and moves him into second place all-time for Castleton with 12 career sacks. He totaled six tackles on the day, none bigger than his sack on 2nd-and-8 that forced a fumble. He picked it up and cruised 32 yards to the end zone for his second career defensive score.
Rookie of the Week
Stefan Anderson - Gallaudet University
(Freshman, LB - New Market, Md.)
Anderson made a career-best nine tackles, tied for the team lead, in a 27-25 loss at home last Saturday against Greensboro College. Four of his nine tackles were solos.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Cassmeir Hutchinson - Gallaudet University
(Sophomore, SL - Chesapeake, Va.)
Hutchinson led Gallaudet's kick return game last week as he averaged 42.5 yards per return. He had a long return of 49 yards in the fourth quarter that helped to set up Gallaudet's fourth touchdown of the game. Hutchinson fielded the kickoff and broke free down the near sideline before he was pushed out of bounds. The Bison scored on that drive to trim the Pride lead to two points, 27-25. Hutchinson finished the day with 85 return yards and 221 all-purpose yards (116 rushing yards) and caught one touchdown pass.
