MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) weekly awards were announced for games through Sunday, September 8th. Maritime’s Robert Wheeler (Staten Island, N.Y.) took home Offensive Player of the Week honors, while teammates Justin Snuffer (Maple Shade, N.J.) and Joseph Gagliardi (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) took home Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.
Offensive Player of the Week
Robert Wheeler – Maritime (N.Y.)
(Senior, QB – Staten Island, N.Y.)
Wheeler threw for 148 yards on 15/26 attempts and rushed for a net of 99 yards on 16 attempts. The senior quarterback threw the game-tying touchdown to Andrew Geni with less than two minutes on the clock and rushed for 21 yards in the final drive to set up the game-winning field goal.
Defensive Player of the Week
Justin Snuffer – Maritime (N.Y.)
(Senior, DB - Maple Shade, N.J.)
Snuffer came up with a key interception with less than 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter to give the offense the chance to tie the game with a touchdown. Minutes later, Maritime completed the comeback to defeat Maine Maritime, 24-21.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Joseph Gagliardi - Maritime (N.Y.)
(Sophomore, K/P - Ronkonkoma, N.Y.)
Gagliardi went 3/3 on extra points and drained a 43-yard field goal with one second left to complete a fourth quarter comeback win. Maritime trailed 21-7 with less than eight minutes left.
