MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) weekly awards were announced for games through Sunday, September 4th.  Thomas Wright (Wantagh, N.Y.) of Maritime (N.Y.) was named Offensive Player of the Week, while teammates Nick Conte (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Matthew Murphy (Seaford, N.Y.) garnered Defensive Player of the Week and Special Teams Player of the Week accolades respectively. Timel Benton (Columbia, S.C.) of Gallaudet University and Norwich University's Patrick Brown (Pooler, Ga.) each earned Rookie of the Week honors for their performances over the weekend.

Offensive Player of the Week


Thomas Wright - Maritime (N.Y.)
(Junior, QB - Wantagh, N.Y.)

In his first career start as the Maritime quarterback, junior Thomas Wright completed 10 of his 16 passing attempts, including two touchdown throws. He added another 59 yards on the ground, and ran for a touchdown as he had three scores on the afternoon in Maritime's come-from-behind win in overtime against Maine Maritime. Wright's rushing touchdown and his second passing touchdown led Maritime back from a 28-14 deficit to tie the game late in the fourth quarter to force the overtime period.

Defensive Player of the Week

Nick Conte - Maritime (N.Y.)
(Junior, DB - Franklin Square, N.Y.)

Junior Nick Conte tied a Maritime record in the team's overtime win over Maine Maritime as he recorded two interceptions, which had only been done just six times in the 10-year history of Maritime Football. He also set a career-high with 12 tackles on the game. One of his two interceptions came with Maine Maritime driving in the last minute of overtime, as his interception ended regulation. He had a combined 42 return yards on his pair of interceptions.

Rookie of the Week


Patrick Brown - Norwich University
(Freshman, RB - Pooler, Ga.)


Brown was impressive in his debut as a Cadet as he led the Norwich offense with 117 rushing yards (averaging 6.2 yards per carry) and a touchdown in Saturday's loss to RPI. He rounded out his day tacking on three catches for for 53 yards. 

Rookie of the Week

 

Timel Benton – Gallaudet University 
(Freshman, QB - Columbia, S.C.)


In his collegiate debut under the center, the freshman led the team in rushing with 17 rushes for 86 yards (averaging 5.1 yards per carry). His longest run of the night was a scramble for 22 yards in a 43-6 loss to Shenandoah. He completed 2 of 5 passes for 40 percent and had one interception.

Special Teams Player of the Week


Matthew Murphy - Maritime (N.Y.)
(Junior, K - Seaford, N.Y.)

Junior kicker Matthew Murphy was a perfect 5-for-5 on his extra point attempts. In addition to his extra points, Murphy had five kickoffs for 324 yards, with one of the kickoffs going for a touchback, and another being downed at the one-yard line. The downed kickoff at the one came at a crucial point in the game as Maritime was within one touchdown at 28-21 with 5:08 left in regulation.
