ECFC Announces 2019 Major Awards & All-Conference Selections

MARSHFIELD, Mass. – The Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) announced their all-conference teams and major award winners for the 2019 season as voted on by the league's six head coaches. Student-athletes from all six member institutions earned recognition.  Dean College led the way with 12 all-conference selections and three of the league's major awards.

 

Offensive Player of the Year:

Quarterback Terrell Watts (New Haven, Conn.) of Dean College earned Offensive Player of the Year accolades after a jaw-dropping sophomore campaign with the Bulldogs. He led the conference in nearly every passing category including touchdowns (27), yards (2,430), yards per game (270.0) and a completion rate of 59.8.%. The sophomore also added four rushing touchdowns on the season.

 

Defensive Player of the Year:

Chris Rice (Bethel Conn.) of Castleton University was named Defensive Player of the Year after an impressive junior season for the Spartans. Rice headlined a strong Spartan front-seven, amassing 50 tackles, including 18 for a loss which led the ECFC. He also added two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, a blocked kick, a pass breakup and a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown. He finished his junior season as Castleton's all-time leader in career sacks (15) and set a program single season record with 7.0 sacks.

 

Offensive Lineman of the Year:

Maritime's Michael Korwan (Wantagh, N.Y.) was honored as ECFC Offensive Lineman of the Year after his impressive senior campaign. Korwan anchored a line that rushed for 1,523 yards, good for third in the ECFC. His line was also best in the league at protecting the quarterback, surrendering only 12 sacks in 10 games played this season.

 

Special Teams Player of the Year:

Joseph Gagliardi (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) of Maritime College earned ECFC Special Teams Player of the Year honors after a successful 2019 campaign. The sophomore scored 36 points by way of 15 extra points and seven field goals. He led the conference in XP%, missing only one for a 94% success rate. He also contributed in the punting game as he placed 12 within the 20 this season with a long of 68 yards.

 

Rookie of the Year:

Wide Receiver David Robinson (Boston, Mass.) of Anna Maria College was recognized as ECFC Rookie of the Year for the 2019 season. The first-year player made a major impact on the AMCATS offense, scoring seven touchdowns despite missing three games on the year due to injury. He hauled in 30 passes on the year for 473 yards en route to the honor.

 

Coach of the Year:

Dean College Head Coach, Steve Tirrell, was recognized by his peers as ECFC Coach of the Year. He led the Bulldogs to the ECFC title this season with a 4-1 record in conference play. The team also received a bid in the New England Bowl series where they will take on Endicott College in the season finale.

 

Assistant Coach of the Year:

Anthony Baskerville, Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach at Dean College earned ECFC Assistant Coach of the Year accolades after helping lead the Bulldogs to a regular season title and Bowl bid. Baskerville's offense ranked tops in the ECFC in points per game (30.1), touchdowns (40) and yards per game (402.9).

 

ECFC all-conference selections are determined by a vote of the conference coaches.
