Mickey Rehring has been named the new head coach of the Maritime College football program, as announced by Director of Athletics, Kristofer Schnatz on Monday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. Coach Rehring joins the Privateers after seven seasons with Johns Hopkins University as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach from 2012-2018. "We couldn't be more excited to have Coach Rehring join the Privateers," said Schnatz. "We're confident that he will bring his wealth of experience and success from Johns Hopkins to our program and that he will continue the strong traditions of Maritime football."
"I'd like to thank the Director of Athletics, Kristofer Schnatz, Dean of Students, Will Imbriale, the search committee and especially Admiral Alfultis for trusting me to be the head coach of Maritime football," said Rehring. "I'd also like to thank my wife, Trish, for allowing me to be in this crazy world of football and supporting me every step of the way. I wouldn't be able to do this without her and she's just as excited about this opportunity as I am."
During Rehring's time at Johns Hopkins, he helped lead the team to a 58-2 regular season record; 64-8 overall. In 2018, Rehring helped the Blue Jays reach the NCAA semifinals after winning a seventh consecutive Centennial Conference Championship on the Johns Hopkins staff. Rehring's defense only allowed 15.64 points per game last season, including two shutouts and two more games with less than 10 points allowed, and was also top 50 in the country in eight out of 10 major statistical categories. Rehring earned the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year award for his efforts. During his time as a coordinator, the Blue Jays won seven NCAA playoff games and he recorded the most wins of any coordinator over the last 29 seasons under the late Jim Margraff.
Rehring has coached four Centennial Conference Defensive Players of the Year and 37 total All-Conference players since 2012. Johns Hopkins was first in the conference in defensive scoring between 2014 and 2018, and first in the conference in passing defense in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018. In the 2015 season, he helped lead the defense to be the second best in the nation in turnovers gained. Additionally, the Blue Jays defense was first in the conference in red zone defense in 2014 and 2016, first in the conference in sacks in 2013 (eighth in the nation) and 2017 (fourth in the nation), and top-two in the conference in third down efficiency between 2013 and 2018.
Prior to Johns Hopkins coach Rehring was the Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach at Bowdoin College from 2009 to 2012, where he helped lead the special teams unit to be first in the conference in kickoff return average and 10th in the nation in 2010. Coach Rehring's first coaching job was at his alma mater, Franklin & Marshall College in 2008, where he was the Defensive Line Coach, Assistant Video Coordinator, and Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. Rehring graduated from Franklin & Marshall after four years as a starter on their defensive line. In 2005 he earned a Second-Team All-Conference selection.
"My goals will be that our student-athletes come to Maritime College to get a great education, and play a high level of football," said Rehring. "Once their four years are complete I want them to be able to say that they made a difference on campus and that Maritime football made a difference in their lives."
